Men's Tennis Travels to Cajun Classic
September 21, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Connor Curry, Artem Kapshuk and Alex Sendegeya will make their fall debuts for the Red Raiders.
LAFAYETTE, La. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team heads to its second of seven fall events at the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic over the weekend hosted by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
The three-day tournament features a pair of 16-player singles draws and a 16-team doubles draw. The Red Raiders won the doubles title last year as Alex Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson defeated two ITA Top 35 teams from Kentucky and LSU during the semifinals and finals.
Texas Tech will have Connor Curry, Artem Kapshuk and Sendegeya making their first fall appearances of the season. Curry and Sendegeya combined for 45 singles wins last season, and Curry enters the weekend at No. 98 in the ITA singles rankings. Kapshuk transferred to the Red Raiders after he spent his first two seasons at Temple. He produced a 42-16 singles record and won 30 of his 40 dual matches primarily at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots.
"These guys have had a little bit more time to prepare and a little more individual time with the coaches," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "I think we have a more experienced group going to this tournament. This was a great event for us last year. We had success with Alex and Bjorn winning the doubles. You want to have a goal in mind at every tournament you play. Mine is that you should come home with hardware. Most importantly right now, it's about building ourselves toward getting better and playing good tennis. A week from now is going to be the big national tournament at ITAs. If things don't go well this week, let's make sure that we work on it and get ready for the weeks to come."
Texas Tech will split its squad for the Rice Invitational in Houston and the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships hosted by Tulsa next weekend.
