Cobb's 3-0 Mark Highlights Day One at Rice Invite

Jackson Cobb will play in the singles and doubles semifinals on Saturday.

HOUSTON, Texas – Jackson Cobb fired off a pair of straight set singles victories and added a doubles win with Matheus Leite to fuel the Texas Tech men's tennis team opening day efforts at the Rice Invitational on Friday.

Cobb dialed up a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Incarnate Word's Joey Vatanadilok and grinded out a tightly-contested 6-4, 7-6 (6) decision over Isaac Perez of Air Force to secure his semifinal spot in singles. He improved to 3-0 with Leite in fall doubles courtesy of an 8-5 win versus Miami's Pablo Aycart Joya and Adria Soriano Barrera.

"Our goal today was to have strong starts in our matches," Texas Tech assistant coach Daniel Whitehead said. "We did that well in some matches and had to come from behind in other matches. The guys fought hard, but we need to start matches faster during the first set. We have a lot of tennis in front of us over the next two days. We will look to improve and get stronger as the event goes on. Jackson was the highlight of the day going undefeated."

Leite battled back for a comeback 2-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (10-8) win against Incarnate Word's Gabriel Evans before he bowed out to Agus Savarino of UNC Wilmington in his quarterfinal matchup.

Texas Tech's Tommy Mylnikov received an opening round bye at the Saint Francis ITA All-American Championships. He will face either Noe Khlif of Illinois or Eddy Leardini of Oral Roberts in Saturday's second round of prequalifying.
