Miguel Bautista and Seselia Dala lead the charge in strong showing as focus turns to Big 12s.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Upperclassmen Miguel Bautista and Seselia Dala led strong bounce-back performances for the Red Raiders as Texas Tech 's men's and women's teams wrapped up competition at Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invitational Saturday morning.
Â
In the men's race, Miguel Bautista came within three seconds of the win, placing third with a 23:55.5. The redshirt senior was one of three runners – the other two from Oklahoma State – that outpaced the rest of the pack and made the run for first. Bautista's finish helped propel the men into a 15th-place team finish. Â
Â
For Bautista, the performance will be used as motivation for the upcoming Big 12 Championships.
Â
"We did what we came to do, and now we're going to recharge and get ready for championship season," he said. "It's Texas Tech all day."
Â
Bautista was joined in the top-100 by two other Red Raiders – Stephen Alvarez and Joacim Zuniga. Alvarez, who placed 69th, ran a 25:52.9. Zuniga placed 90th with a 26:09.8.
Â
On the women's side, Seselia Dala ran a half-minute PR of 21:43.1 in the 6k to place 33rd. The South Plains transfer was one of six Tech women that finished in the top-100. The other scoring PRs came from Bret Leigh Nance (22:05.4), Lauren Offerman (22:16.2), Arianna Lopez (22:26.1) and Binta Ka (22:50.1). Although she did not score, Jazmyn Martinez also PR'd with a 22:53.3.
Â
"Our girls really stepped up to the plate, and that's the attitude we want to take into conference," Dala said following the meet.
Â
The Big 12 Championships will be hosted by Iowa State on Oct. 26. Â
