Tech Stuns No. 17 Texas With Late Goal

Red Raiders take down No. 17 Longhorns in spectacular regular season finale.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech dropped No. 17 Texas, 1-0, in thrilling fashion Thursday night to conclude the regular season. The win, which pushes Tech to an undefeated 3-0 against ranked opponents this season, means the Red Raiders will finish in a three-way tie for third in the final Big 12 regular season standings.
The sellout crowd of over 2,000 fans that packed the John Walker Soccer Complex got all they expected, as the cross-state rivalry yielded yet another nail biter. Unlike three of the last four meetings between the two, though, this one did not need to be decided in overtime. The one to blame was Kirsten Davis, who in the 86th minute accepted a perfect pass from Jayne Lydiatt and beat the keeper one-on-one, going bar-in for the late-game dagger.

The score, which was Davis' fifth of the season, came after 86 minutes of tense back-and-forth action. The two squads saw several good chances throughout the game, but neither could convert. Tech seemed to have Texas on its heels all night long, as the Red Raiders earned eight corners to Texas' two. The Longhorns, however, did well to squander each of those opportunities.
Following the results of the rest of the conference, Tech will enter the Big 12 Championship as the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 TCU. The Red Raiders will get their shot at avenging last week's loss to the Horned Frogs at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City.
