Men finish sixth while women take seventh in Ames.
AMES, Iowa – Texas Tech cross country began postseason running Friday at the Big 12 Championships hosted by Iowa State. The men's team finished with 166 points to place sixth, just 10 points behind Kansas State. The women's squad tallied 217, which was good for seventh.
Â
"I'm proud of both teams and their efforts," said head coach Jon Murray. "Good job by the entire group."
Â
As they have throughout the whole season, the young women's team continues to rack up personal bests week after week. This week, seven of the 10 runners recorded PRs. They were led by Seselia Dala, whose 21:31.7 landed her in 34th place. She was closely followed by Lauren Offerman, who turned in a 22:00.7 to finish 49th. Bret Leigh Nance was just a second behind Offerman with a personal-best 22:01.7 at 50th.
Â
Also scoring for the women were freshmen Binta Ka (22:13.0) in 57th place and Jazmyn Martinez (22:35.0) in 64th.
Â
"The women just keep on improving," Murray said after the race.
Â
The men's team was led by Joacim Zuniga and Miguel Bautista, who both powered through nagging injuries to land in the top-25. Zuniga ran a 24:41.9 to finish 18th, while Bautista crossed with a 24:50.5 to take 21st.
Â
"The men have overcome different obstacles this season and yet still ran season-best races," said Murray.
Â
Behind the two leading Red Raiders was Nathan Gift, who ran a strong 25:42.1 to place 42nd. Also scoring for the men were Shea Whatley (46th place) and Connor Hughes (48th).
