Satchell’s Grand Slam Boosts Tech to Third Fall Win
October 04, 2018 | Softball
Red Raiders improve to 3-0 this fall with a 7-5 win over Clarendon Wednesday.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech softball's Taylor Satchell has two career home runs to her name entering her senior season, but the Red Raider infielder connected on a grand slam Wednesday afternoon that sent Tech to a 7-5 win over Clarendon College in its third contest of the fall at Rocky Johnson Field.
The Red Raiders improve to 3-0 for the fall and travel to the University of Houston for a four-game event Saturday and Sunday. Tech will see the Cougars twice and also play a pair against Lamar.
Five newcomers and six total underclassmen got the nod in the starting lineup for a Red Raider squad that showed tremendous patience at the dish, especially in the latter stages of the game as the Bulldogs dug into their bullpen.
"We showed discipline at the plate," head coach Adrian Gregory said. "We made sure we hit the pitches we wanted to hit. That gave us an opportunity to have base runners, and it gave Taylor an opportunity to have a really big moment."
Satchell finished 2-for-4, while redshirt sophomore Heaven Burton went 2-for-4 with a run scored to record her third multi-hit effort in as many games.
DePaul transfer Missy Zoch tossed four shutout innings in the start before Clarendon got on the board in the fifth. Freshman Morgan Hornback relieved her and struck out four in two innings of work.
The Red Raider defense was clean once again on Wednesday and has yet to commit an error this fall despite a heavy mix of newcomers all over the field.
