Zucchetto Picks Up Big 12 Defensive Honors Again
October 09, 2018 | Women's Soccer
The sophomore keeper was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.
IRVING, Texas – For the second time this season, the Big 12 honored Texas Tech goalkeeper Marissa Zucchetto as the Defensive Player of the Week. The honor comes on the heels of a four-save shutout the sophomore recorded on the road at Oklahoma State last weekend. Tech's 1-0 win over the Cowgirls marked the first time OSU had been bested in Stillwater since 2016 and the first time they have been shut out this season.   Â
Â
Zucchetto has posted a 10-3-1 record while playing in net every match this season. Of those ten wins, nine have been shutouts. The mark ranks first in the Big 12 and second in the nation.
Â
Zucchetto's stellar 0.49 goals against average is not just a product of her .800 save percentage, but also because of an experienced back line that has allowed just 2.50 shots on goal per game by opposing offenses. It is the back line that Zucchetto feels has allowed her to post so many clean sheets.
Â
"I give a lot of credit to my defense because they limit the amount of opportunities the opposition has on me," she said. "I feel we have a great connection and a passion to defend."
Zucchetto and the rest of the Red Raiders will head to Kansas for their first two-game Big 12 road trip of the season. They will play Kansas State in Manhattan at 7 p.m. Friday night before heading to Lawrence to play Kansas at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
