Sofia Garcia recorded three top-10 finishes in October, including medalist honors at Illini Invitational
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech sophomore Sofia Garcia was named Wednesday the Big 12 Golfer of the Month for October in response to her first career victory several weeks ago at the Illini Invitational.
Â
This is the first career monthly award for Garcia, who has finished among the top-15 individuals in all four of Tech's tournaments this year, three that were in the month of October. She finished at par or better in all but two of her nine rounds during the month.
Â
The highlight of Garcia's month came at Medinah Country Club as she shared medalist honors for the first time in her career. Garcia was under par in all three rounds, highlighted by a 4-under-par 68 card in the second round followed by a 3-under score to end the tournament.
Â
Garcia followed by finishing tied for 10th at the Betsy Rawls Invitational and then closed the month in a tie for third at the Jim West Challenge. She signed for a 3-under 69 in each of the final two rounds at Jim West Challenge, one of five rounds during the month in the 60s.
Â
Garcia, a native of Asuncion, Paraguay, is the first Red Raider to be named the Big 12 Golfer of the Month since Gabby Barker claimed the award in May 2016.
Â
The Jim West Challenge closed the fall slate for the Red Raiders as Tech will resume its 2018-19 schedule Feb. 16-17 at the Mercer Invitational in Atlanta. Tech will play in six tournaments this spring leading up to the Big 12 Championships on April 14-16 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
