No. 10 Tech Claims Third-Straight Top-Two Finish
March 07, 2018 | Men's Golf
Red Raiders take second in a field that included seven top-25 teams
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – After starting the tournament in 11th place through 18 holes, No. 10 Texas Tech men's golf climbed all the way back into the race and eventually took second at the Southern Highlands Collegiate, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Red Raiders battled their way back through a field loaded with some of the nation's best talent. Tech was one of seven top-25 and 11 top-40 teams in the field. The Red Raiders outpaced No. 4 Alabama, No. 8 Oklahoma, No. 14 Illinois, No. 19 USC and No. 21 UCLA, among others.
The second-place finish (-1) was the third in a row for the Red Raiders, and their fifth in the six tournaments they've played this season.
"Obviously we didn't get off to the start we wanted, but I'm incredibly proud of the way the guys battled back," Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "Against a field like this, to keep patient and stay the course says a lot about this group. This is a performance you can call on in the postseason. Things may not always go your way in the first 18, but you have 36 more to battle back. That's what we did."
Tech came out of the gates scorching hot, going 10-under in the first five holes, on its way to a -6 282, the second-lowest round of the day.
Individually, the Red Raiders recorded three individual top-20 finishes. Hurly Long (-2) led the way, tying for seventh, and Fredrik Nilehn (-1) tied for 11th. Nilehn, who shot a 69 on Wednesday, has now logged a top-15 finish in each tournament this season.
Ivan Ramirez (+2) tied for 20th, Sandy Scott (+7) tied for 48th and Adam Blomme (+8) tied for 56th, to round out the team scoring.
The Red Raiders will be back in action March 12-13, at the Lampkin San Diego Classic, in San Diego, Calif.
