The Red Raiders lost their first spring match of the year against the Owls.
HOUSTON, Texas – Texas Tech soccer dropped its first spring match of the season on Saturday against Rice, 2-1, at Holloway Field in Houston.
Â
The decision moved the Red Raiders to a 4-1 mark during the 2018 spring slate. Tech has picked up victories over New Mexico (4-1), West Texas A&M (2-0), Abilene Christian (4-0) and Oklahoma State (2-1) during this year's schedule.
Â
"This match was a good reminder that it's about what you do with your chances as opposed to how many you create," head coach Tom Stone said. "With a 16-to-five shot advantage, as well as leading eight-to-two in corner kicks, you would think we would come out on top. Credit Rice as they did more with their chances than we did with ours."
Â
Senior midfielder Jordan Duke scored the lone goal for the Red Raiders. However, despite the advantage in total shots & corner kick opportunities, Tech was unable to rally to beat the Owls.
Â
"The spring season gives us a chance to evaluate our team needs as a whole and help identify the potential top 11 for next fall," Stone said. "Each game so far has been quite helpful on both fronts and we are excited about our spring finale vs. LSU next week."
Â
The Red Raiders wrap the spring slate against LSU in Bossier City on April 14 at 3:30 p.m.
Â
The Red Raiders put together a 9-7-3 record during the 2017 fall season, missing postseason play for the first time in six years. Tech will return the bulk of its core, graduating four seniors, while adding three mid-year enrollees and eight on National Signing Day to get ready for an exciting 2018 campaign.
