Lauren Mason matched the lowest round ever by a Red Raider at the Big 12 Championships Sunday
DALLAS – Texas Tech posted the second-lowest score of Sunday's final round at the Big 12 Championships as the Red Raiders combined for a 6-over-par 294 to finish in sixth place at the Dallas Athletic Club.
Â
Lauren Mason led the way for Tech, signing for a 2-under 70 that matched the lowest ever by a Red Raider at the Big 12 Championships. She joined Gabby Dominguez (2011) and Stephanie Bertelsen as the only Red Raiders in program history to post a 70 round at the conference tournament.
"Our team played hard this week," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "Conditions were tough and they fought all day. We got close a couple of times to making a move but couldn't quite get it done. I'm proud of them for their work this spring and the improvement they are showing."
Â
Mason's round was boosted early by an eagle at the par-5 3rd and then a birdie at the par-4 5th, which began a nine-hole stretch where she was 5-under overall. Four of her five birdies during that span came on par-4s, pushing Mason into a tie for 14th overall at 8-over for the tournament.
Â
Mason was the highest finisher among four Red Raiders who finished among the top-20 individuals. Gabby Barker and Louisa Brunt both finished a stroke back of Mason in a tie for 16th overall, while Mami Yamamoto was 11-over for the tournament which was good enough for a tie for 19th.
Â
Brunt and Barker both capitalized on strong back nines to finish 2-over on the day. Brunt sank a pair of birdies to finish 1-under over the final nine holes, while Barker was even over that span courtesy of two birdies of her own and six-straight pars to end the round.
Â
Amy Taylor completed Tech's team card with a 4-over round that moved her to 15-over for the tournament and into a tie for 29th overall. Yamamoto, meanwhile, rounded out the Tech lineup with a 5-over final round.
Â
Despite the strong final round, Tech was unable to move up the leaderboard as the Red Raiders finished at 33-over 897, which was five strokes back of Oklahoma in fifth place. The Red Raiders came into the final round nine strokes out of the top five.
Â
Top-seeded Texas used a strong final round of its own to win the event as the Longhorns were 5-over Sunday to end the tournament at 16-over. Baylor and Oklahoma State shared second place at 24-over followed by Iowa State just a stroke back in fourth.
Â
The Red Raiders will find out Wednesday afternoon if they have done enough to advance to an NCAA Regional for the eighth time in the past nine years. The NCAA Selection Show will begin at 4:30 p.m. CT on the Golf Channel.
