April 26, 2018 | Softball
Softball travels to Lawrence needing two wins to secure a bid to the 2018 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championships.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech softball team plays its final Big 12 series of the season this weekend as it travels to Lawrence, Kansas, for a three-game set against the Jayhawks April 27-29 at Arrocha Ballpark.
Â
The Red Raiders (22-24, 2-13) and Jayhawks (25-21, 0-12) open the series on Friday with a 5 p.m. first pitch available on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. The two sides are back at it on Saturday at 2 p.m. and on Sunday at noon.
Â
With two weeks left in the regular season, Tech controls its own destiny for a spot in the 2018 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship. The Red Raiders would secure a bid with a series victory at Kansas. With one win in Lawrence, Tech would need Iowa State to sweep Kansas on the final week of the season.
Â
The Red Raiders squared off against the Cyclones last weekend, dropping the first two games before taking the series finale 5-3 on Senior Day. Kansas, meanwhile, was swept at No. 21 Baylor last weekend and had its midweek contest against Omaha rained out.
Â
Junior Jessica Hartwell homered against Iowa State to continue her ascent up the Texas Tech record books. The Galt, Calif., native has 15 dingers on the year and is now two home runs away from matching the school's single-season home run record.
Â
Looking back at last season, Kansas took two-of-three from the Red Raiders in Lubbock. The Jayhawks took the first two games by scores of 8-5 and 5-4, before Tech fired back with a 9-3 win in the finale. Tech tallied 29 hits, five home runs and five stolen bases in the three games.
Â
Kansas leads the overall series 35-21 with a 13-9 edge in Lawrence. KU has won five of the last six matchups, including a three-game sweep the last time Tech made the trip to Kansas. That followed a two-year stretch where Tech won five of six, including a sweep at KU in 2014.
