JuCo Transfer is first to sign with Head Coach Marlene Stollings
LUBBOCK, Texas – Lady Raider Basketball Head Coach Marlene Stollings announced the signing of Mia Castaneda to the 2018-19 team. Castaneda is the first commitment for Coach Stollings.
"Mia is a West Texas sharpshooter that we are extremely excited to have joining our program," Stollings said. "She has an innate ability to elevate those around her. Mia is a fierce competitor who plays with heart, passion and a refuse-to-lose mentality. Her efficiency from behind the arc (46 percent), her work ethic and her leadership are a welcome addition to our Lady Raider program."
Castaneda is a 5-6 junior college transfer from Hereford, Texas. She spent the last two seasons at Clarendon Junior College. She is considered one of the most prolific scorers in school history. She started in all 60 games of her career under Head Coach Mark James and finished with 1,051 career points.
"I am excited to be coming to a program that is full of energy. I'm ready to get to work and help turn the program around," Castaneda said. "The accolades that come to Tech through this amazing coaching staff are exactly what I was looking for. Today a childhood dream comes true - I am a Lady Raider!"
Castaneda averaged 19.2 points as a freshman and 15.8 points as a sophomore and hit 187 three pointers over her two-year career.
Castaneda was named All-Western Junior College Athletic Conference in both seasons.
During her high school career at Hereford High School, Castaneda was a two-time District 3-5A Most Valuable Player and two-time All-District first team selection. She was also named a member of the Class 5-6A All Legacy team by the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) following her senior season.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT MIA CASTANEDA:
"Mia embodies everything you want in a student/athlete. She is a tremendous basketball player, an outstanding student, heavily involved in the community, and the face of our program. With all of that being said she is an even better human being than she is anything else."
