April 30, 2018 | Softball
Red Raiders and Wildcats will square off at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Rocky Johnson Field
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech softball team closes its 2018 regular-season home slate on Tuesday when it welcomes Abilene Christian to Rocky Johnson Field for a midweek tilt, starting at 6 p.m.
Â
The Red Raiders (25-24, 5-13) have won four in a row and are out for revenge against the Wildcats (21-23, 13-11) after giving up a seven-run lead in an 11-10 loss in Abilene on April 10. Tuesday's contest will be streamed at TexasTech.TV with Jody Roginson on the call. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for youth (ages 2-17) and are available online or at the gate.
Â
Tech enters the midweek following a three-game sweep at Kansas in which it outhit the Jayhawks 32-13 for the series. With the lineup doing damage at the plate, Tech's defense had a clean weekend and has now tallied 26 straight innings of error-free ball for its best stretch since 2015. The defense aided a strong outing from sophomore Kassidy Scott on Sunday to cap off the sweep with the program's first shutout of a Big 12 team on the road since 2014.
Â
With the series sweep, the Red Raiders secured their second straight bid to the 2018 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship since the tournament was reinstated in 2017. Tech currently sits at fifth in the conference standings and would earn the fifth seed if Kansas takes its series over Iowa State this weekend.
Â
Redshirt sophomore Karli Hamilton led the charge at the plate, going 7-for-9 with a three-run home run, two walks and a stolen base in Lawrence. The Houston native, who hit safely in all three games and carries an 11-game hit streak overall, led the conference with a .778 average and .818 on-base percentage for week 12, while her five runs scored were tied for the league lead and her 1.111 slugging percentage ranked third.
Â
ACU has won eight of its last 11 games despite dropping two of three at Central Arkansas last week. The Wildcats currently sit in a logjam in the Southland Conference standings and can finish as high as fourth with one series remaining.
Â
Following Tuesday's contest, Tech will head to El Paso, Texas, to close the regular season with a doubleheader at UTEP on May 3. Sporting one of the youngest teams in the nation, the Red Raiders have exceeded both its 2017 conference record and 2017 win total.
