Tech in 6th Following Rollercoaster First Round
May 14, 2018 | Men's Golf
The Red Raiders will resume play at 7 a.m. CT tomorrow
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 13 Texas Tech men's golf team had an up-and-down first day at the NCAA Columbus Regional, but finished the round in sixth place Monday, just four shots off the cutline, at The Scarlet Course.
Tech was steady early on as Hurly Long birdied the second, setting the tone for what would be a solid day for him, individually.
Long would go on to birdie No. 6 as well, and after Ivan Ramirez birdied No. 5 and Adam Blomme birdied No. 8, Tech was two-over as a team heading into the turn.
The Red Raiders took advantage of the short par-5 No. 12, going 4-under to move to +6, just one shot off the coveted fifth spot required to advance to nationals. However, Tech would go on to collect 12 bogeys on holes 13-16.
Long drained a lengthy birdie putt on 17 to bring The Red Raiders back to +13, and that's where they would finish the round. Tech will head into moving day just four shots behind the the fifth-place spot.
"I still feel like this team, if we control what we can control, and have good attitudes along with good approaches, can put together a really good round tomorrow," Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "We just didn't do that today. We know what we need to do, we've just been getting in our own way a bit. That's all on the mental side of things. We've seen glimpses of good things—we just need to put it all together."
Individually, Long carded two birdies on the back nine to match his two on the front, and ended up with a 1-under 70, placing him in a tie for third on the overall leaderboard.
Adam Blomme (+2, T26) shot a 2-over 73, Ramirez (+5, T56) shot a 5-over 76, and Fredrik Nilehn, in his first tournament back from injury, registered a 7-over 78 to round out the team scoring.
The Red Raiders will tee off at 7 a.m. CT tomorrow, off the 10th tee, paired with No. 6 seed Northwestern and No. 7 seed Penn State.
The top four individual scores of the five participants each day will count toward the overall team score. The top five teams from each region will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 24-30, at Karsten Creek, in Stillwater, Okla.
Live scoring will be available all week via Golfstat. For more news and updates on Texas Tech Men's Golf, follow the team on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
