May 28, 2018 | Baseball
The Red Raiders will host Louisville, Kent State and New Mexico State at Lubbock Regional
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech baseball team has been named the No. 9 national seed and will take on New Mexico State on Friday, June 1, at 1 p.m., at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park, the NCAA Selection Committee announced today.
Â
Tech is also paired with Louisville and Kent State, who will face off in the second game of the regional at 6 p.m., on Friday. All of the Lubbock Regional will air on WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app, while Tech games can also be heard on the Texas Tech Sports Network on 97.3 FM, the 97.3 app, the TuneIn app and at TexasTech.com.
Â
The Red Raiders (39-17) were one of 16 host sites selected on Sunday night by the NCAA Selection Committee. It's the first time in school history Tech has hosted an NCAA Regional in three-straight years and the sixth overall. The Red Raiders have played regional action in Lubbock in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2016 & 2017. This year marks the 13th overall berth in an NCAA Regional for Texas Tech.
Â
It will be the third time this season the Red Raiders & Aggies (40-20) will meet on the field, with Tech claiming the other two contests. The Red Raiders defeated NMSU on Feb. 20 by a score of 12-0 in Lubbock, then used a walk-off home run to win the neutral-site contest on April 3 in Midland, 2-1. Tech is 50-18 all-time against the Aggies, who picked up the Western Athletic Conference Tournament title last weekend.
Â
Another familiar foe will head to Lubbock in Louisville (43-17), who will be the two-seed at the regional. The Red Raiders & Cardinals split its season series in Kentucky on March 13-14, with Tech recording an 8-4 victory in the opener, before dropping a 7-4 decision in the finale. Louisville finished fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference and fell in extra innings in the ACC title game on Sunday.
Â
The Red Raiders have never faced Kent State (39-16), who won the Mid-American Conference behind a 14-0 victory over Miami on Saturday. The Golden Flashes also claimed the MAC regular season crown behind a 19-8 league record. Along with Kent State, Tech has not faced any of the teams in 2018 Lubbock Regional in postseason play.
Â
In observance of the Memorial Day holiday, the Texas Tech Athletics Ticket Office will be closed on Monday, May 28. Season ticket holders and Red Raider club members may request tickets online at TexasTech.com and have until Tuesday, May 29, at 5 p.m., to request all-session tickets to the regional.
Â
Tech is offering only all-session passes at this time. If seats remain following the season ticket holder/Red Raider Club priority request period, all remaining all-session tickets will go on sale to the general public on Wednesday, May 30, at 8:30 a.m.
Â
