Sofia Garcia begins play at the South American Games Wednesday as part of Team Paraguay
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech sophomore Sofia Garcia will make her return to competitive golf Wednesday when she tees off at the South American Games as part of the team representing her native Paraguay.
Â
It will be the first tournament since this past September for Garcia, who missed the rest of the 2017-18 campaign after suffering an injury shortly after the season-opening Jim West Challenge. Garcia led the Red Raiders in that tournament, finishing tied for sixth at 8-under-par over three rounds.
Â
The injury halted what many forecasted to be another strong year for Garcia after she was one of the top freshmen in the country during the 2016-17 season. Garcia pushed the Red Raiders to the NCAA Championships that season with a team-low 73.6 stroke average, the lowest ever for a Tech freshman.
Â
Garcia will be one of three players from Paraguay to take part in the South American Games, which are held every four years, featuring over 350 events and over 4,000 athletes among the 14 participating nations. The golf portion of the games will take place at the Country Club of Cochabamba.
Â
Bolivia is the host nation as Paraguay will be joined by Argentina, Aruba, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela in the 11th edition of the South American Games.
Â
Garcia arrived at Tech with already a considerable amount of international experience as she won the South American Amateur in 2015 and 2016. She also competed in the World Amateur Championships and the Ladies European Amateur prior to enrolling at Tech.
Â
Garcia, a native of Asuncion, Paraguay, qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur last summer shortly after finishing tied for 32nd at the NCAA Championships. It was the highest finish for a Tech freshman at the national championships in school history.
