Texas Tech assistant coach Laurie Brower is slated for a 7:44 a.m. CT start Thursday in Illinois
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech assistant coach Laurie Brower will return to the highest stage in competitive golf Thursday when she tees off at the inaugural U.S. Senior Women's Open held at the Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Illinois.
Â
Brower will be among the first groups to open the four-day tournament Thursday as she is paired with Christa Johnson and amateur Julie Wirth in the 7:44 a.m. CT start time from the No. 1 box. The trio will be in the afternoon wave Friday with a 12:54 tee time at the No. 10 box.
Â
Brower earned her spot in the 120-player field after finishing second overall at a qualifying tournament at the Onion Creek Golf Club in Austin on June 18. Brower fired a 3-over-par 75 card to join Lisa Depaulo, Susie Kirk and Loretta Young as advancing players from the qualifier.
Â
Brower is no stranger to tournaments hosted by the USGA as she most recently played in the U.S. Women's Open in 2008 as part of a successful career on the LPGA Tour. Brower collected over $360,000 in total earnings over her 10-year career before retiring in 2002. She also played six years on both the Futures and Players West Tours after concluding her collegiate career at Tech.
Â
The USGA announced the creation of the U.S. Senior Women's Open in 2015, placing the inaugural tournament at the Chicago Golf Club, which is hosting its first Open championship in 107 years. Eligibility for the event is limited to professional and amateur players age 50 and older.
Â
FOX Sports 1 will provide coverage of the U.S. Senior Women's Open from 3-5 p.m. CT during Saturday's third round and Sunday's final 18 holes.
Â
Brower was elevated to a full-time assistant coach at her alma mater prior to the qualifier in early June. She rejoined the Tech staff this past January in a volunteer assistant role, helping lead the Red Raiders to a NCAA Regional appearance for the eighth time in the past nine years.
