August 17, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
Red Raiders set for their final tune-up before launching their 2018 season.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech fans can catch their first glimpse of the 2018 Texas Tech volleyball team Saturday, Aug. 18, as the program hosts its annual Red & Black Scrimmage. First serve at United Supermarkets Arena is set for 6 p.m., and admission is free.
Â
The scrimmage, which is expected to consist of five full sets, caps off two weeks of fall camp for the Red Raiders, now entering their third year under the leadership of head coach Tony Graystone.
Â
"This has been a really smooth preseason for sure," head coach Tony Graystone said. "We've been working a lot on our first touch. We want to see us in system a lot. We want to see what our offense really looks like. We just want to play clean ball and look closer and closer like a team that is ready for the season to start. We call it a scrimmage, but we don't want it to look like a scrimmage. We want it to look like a real match."
Â
The Red Raiders return the bulk of their offensive production from last season, highlighted by returning starters Emily Hill, Chandler Atwood, Katy Keenan, Missy Owens and Allison White.
Â
Hill, Atwood and Keenan were Tech's kill leaders in 2017, while White led the team in blocks as a freshman. Meanwhile, Owens earned All-Big 12 honors last year was named to the All-Big 12 Preseason Team heading into her senior season.
Â
An exciting crop of newcomers will be showcased on Saturday. Graystone signed eight freshman and adds a pair of redshirt freshmen to the mix in Andrea Janss and Hannah Allison.
Â
Following Saturday, the Red Raiders gear up to start the season at home with the two-day Red Raider Classic Aug. 24-25 at United Supermarkets Arena. Tech welcomes Rice, North Dakota and Northwestern State to Lubbock in what marks the earliest home dates in Red Raider volleyball history.
