Four Red Raiders Earn a Spot in ITA Fall Rankings
September 11, 2018 | Men's Tennis
Tech places four players in the ITA fall rankings for the second time in four years.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team garnered four selections to the 2018 Oracle/ITA Division 1 men's rankings, which are administered each fall by the International Tennis Association (ITA).
Parker Wynn and Tommy Mylnikov each earned top 70 rankings in the national singles poll, coming in at No. 64 and No. 69, respectively. This marks the fifth-consecutive year Tech has garnered at least two spots in the fall singles rankings.
Wynn, who recently transferred to Tech, was a two-time All-ACC third-team selection where he recorded 67 singles victories in his freshman and sophomore seasons. Wynn was also a talented doubles player, earning back-to-back appearances at the 2017 and 2018 NCAA Doubles Championships. Mylnikov boasts a 16-14 doubles record, including multiple wins over top 15 opponents.
Bjorn Thomson and Jackson Cobb also joined the rankings in doubles. The pairing of Thomson and Wynn came in at No. 42, while Mylnikov and Cobb were placed at No. 60.
Thomson is looking to bounce back after an injury sidelined him for the duration of the 2017-18 season. During his sophomore year at Tech, Thomson produced a .824 dual match winning percentage, which ranks fifth-best in Tech history. He also finished the 2016-17 season with a 22-7 singles record, including a 13-match winning streak to start the spring season. Cobb, who is entering his junior season, tallied a 24-14 mark in doubles play, including a doubles title at the ITA Texas Regionals with Alex Sendegeya in the fall of 2017.
The new dual teams of Thomson-Wynn and Cobb-Mylnikov will look to add quality value to a doubles lineup that produced 65 wins a season ago and finished with a .591 winning percentage.
Tech begins its busy fall slate this weekend at the Harvard Chowder Fest in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The three-day event starts on Friday and runs through Sunday.
