King Scores Twice as No. 24 Tech Drops CSUN

Jade King nets both scores as the Red Raiders improve to 17-3-1 over California teams under Tom Stone.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Jade King recorded her second career multi-goal game Thursday night to help move No. 24 Texas Tech to 7-1-0 on the season with a 2-0 win over California State, Northridge.
The game got grittier as it went on, and head coach Tom Stone was glad his team got to experience a high-intensity game on the road and come out on top.
"When you're on the road, teams aren't going to give up. Their fans will be fired up and so will their coaches," Stone said. "I was proud of our young team for weathering the chaos. The second half was just a battle."
King's first score was another Red Raider goal that resulted from winning set pieces – something they struggled with to begin the season but have had success at recently. After a corner from Charlotte Teeter bounced around in the box, King corralled it and fired off a quick shot on the ground that froze the Matador keeper and rolled inside the bottom-right post. The score was King's fifth of the year, and it put the Red Raiders up at half for the third straight match. To assistant coach Nick Hallam, it was the result of repetition and getting to know the set-piece system.
"We've had several players get their head on the ball inside the penalty area," Hallam said. "The ball is arriving in the right place, and we're getting our runs there. The final piece is just getting the right touch to put it in the goal."
King was not done yet, coming back in the 75th minute to put the game away for good. King's goal tied her for the Big 12 lead with six, and the four points she picked up helped her slide into second in the conference. Kirsten Davis was on the assist for the third time in two games.
"Her ability to affect the game for bigger portions has been her goal," said Stone. "Tonight, she logged a lot of minutes and scored both goals, and we couldn't be happier."
King's opportunities have been a result of hard work from the Texas Tech offense, which maintained a solid control over possession throughout the game and delivered well-timed passes upfield.
"The passes from my teammates have been amazing," said King. Speaking specifically on Davis, she said, "She just gets in dangerous places and is really soccer smart. She knows when to pass it and when to shoot it, and that helps a lot having somebody who is really smart on the ball."
Tech will head to Loyola Marymount on Sunday with a chance to wrap up non-conference play with wins in eight of nine matches. First touch will be at 1 p.m. PT/3 p.m. CT.
