The Red Raiders are looking to extend their season-opening four game win streak
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team will be participating in the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off Weekend in Tallahassee on Saturday and Sunday.
The annual event consists of 15 qualifying competitions around the country, with the winner of each two-day tournament advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago, held in February.
"It's going to be a great test for our guys," head coach Brett Masi said. "I challenged them to start the season at 4-0, and they've risen to that challenge. The competition in Florida is going to be tough with two top-25 opponents, but it'll be good for our team to get out there and see where we're at as our season progresses."
The Red Raiders (4-0) will square up with No. 19 Florida State in the first match of the weekend on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT. The winner of Saturday morning's match will face the victor of No. 18 Tennessee and Tulane for a spot in the National Indoor Championships on Sunday at 11 a.m. ET. A consolation match will also be played on Sunday.
Tech is aiming to begin their season at either 5-0 or 6-0 for the second time since 2016. A win over either Florida State or Tennessee would mark the second year in a row that the Red Raiders defeated a top-20 opponent in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, as they defeated No. 15 Virginia a year ago in Charlottesville.
