Tech to send four players to Tulsa for the second time in three years
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's tennis team continues their fall slate with a trip to Tulsa for the Saint Francis/ITA All-American Championships this weekend.
Â
Franco Ribero, Bjorn Thomson, Ilgiz Valiev and Parker Wynn will all hit the court in the annual event hosted by the University of Tulsa.
Â
"I'm excited to see us compete against the best players in the country," head coach Daniel Whitehead said. "It's a great opportunity for a few of our guys to see how far we can go in this tournament in both singles and doubles."
Â
Ribero will kick things off for the Red Raiders with the pre-qualifying stage of singles on Saturday, followed by qualifying action with Thomson and Valiev on Monday. Valiev is appearing in his first tournament of the 2019-20 season after a sophomore campaign in which he racked up 21 wins en route to All-Big 12 honors at the No. 3 singles position. Wynn, who heads into the tournament at No. 39, will round out singles play in the main draw on Wednesday.
Â
The No. 2 ranked pairing of Thomson and Wynn will begin their doubles run in Wednesday's main draw. The duo recently concluded their first tournament of the season with a semifinal appearance at the Battle in the Bay in San Francisco.
Â
"Hopefully we can have another guy or two in the singles main draw to join Parker [Wynn]," Whitehead said. "Bjorn and Parker won a lot of matches last year in doubles at this event and have gained a lot of experience and confidence together ever since."
Â
Tech will continue its fall schedule with its fourth and fifth scheduled events at the Rice Invite from Oct. 18-20 and the ITA Texas Regionals from Oct. 25-28.
