November 11, 2019 | Men's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas – Up two spots after opening the season with two impressive wins, Texas Tech is ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll.
The Red Raiders began their season with an 85-60 win over Eastern Illinois last Tuesday before finishing off the opening week with a 79-44 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at the United Supermarkets Arena. Tech extended a 49-game non-conference home winning streak with the wins and is now 52-5 at home under Chris Beard. The team was ranked No. 13 in the AP Preseason Poll for its highest ranking coming into a season in program history after advancing to the 2019 NCAA Championship Final and winning the 2019 Big 12 regular-season championship.
Tech returns to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday against Houston Baptist at the Chaparral Center in Midland before hosting Tennessee State on Thursday, Nov. 21 at the USA. The Red Raiders were ranked No. 7 in the final AP poll last season before making its tournament run to the final Monday night of the college basketball season.
Kentucky has climbed to No. 1 in the AP Top 25 men's college basketball poll. The Wildcats, who will travel to Lubbock to play the Red Raiders on Jan. 25 in the Big 12/SEC Challenge, rose one spot after winning a 1-vs-2 matchup with Michigan State to open the season in the Champions Classic, followed by an easy win against Eastern Kentucky. Kentucky (2-0) earned 64 of 65 first-place votes in Monday's poll, marking the first time the Wildcats have reached No. 1 since early in the 2016-17 season. This marks the seventh of coach John Calipari's 11 seasons that the Wildcats have spent at least one week atop the AP poll. That includes 10 weeks during the 2011-12 season on the way to the national championship and a start-to-finish stay in 2014-15 as the Wildcats carried an unbeaten record to the Final Four, where they lost to Wisconsin.
Duke climbed two spots to No. 2 after beating Kansas in the Classic's other top-4 matchup. The Spartans fell to No. 3, followed by Louisville -- which claimed the remaining first-place vote. Texas Tech and Louisville are set for a Jimmy V Classic showdown on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Kansas, North Carolina, Maryland, Gonzaga, reigning national champion Virginia and Villanova rounded out the top 10.
