Postgame Quotes: Texas Tech vs. Northwestern State
November 22, 2019 | Women's Basketball
Texas Tech Lady Raider Head Coach Marlene Stollings
Opening statement…
"I want to thank our fans. We had almost 3,000 people here again tonight and we need you all back here on December 4 – that's our next home game. So, big shout out and thank you to our fans. Moving to 3-0 for the first time in three years for the program is a big feat for us as we build. The two young ladies up here had phenomenal nights. I'm really proud of Chrislyn for getting her first double-double of her career and did it with assists and points, then rebounded the ball very well. Defensively, in the first half, I thought we handled the game the way we wanted. We forced a lot of turnovers, and we were pressuring the ball and getting out in transition. That's how we want to play. We have to be able to sustain it a little bit better going into the second half. But, I'm just really proud of our team, our 3-0 start, and being able to go on the road and have the opportunity to win a tournament in California."
On how the team's unselfishness leads to success…
"We're not going to have a selfish team – it's not part of our culture. I think our young ladies have embraced that and it shows. You look at Chrislyn and she leads the conference in assists and has 12 tonight. I think it's a credit to the type of people that we have on our team, the culture of our team and how we want to play. We are going to share the ball and that is going to continue. That is how we want to play."
On their road trip to California for a tournament…
"It is the first time we're headed to the airport, getting on the plane and playing away from here. We didn't have an exhibition game away from here, either. We're looking forward to being together as a family, especially over Thanksgiving, being able to connect more on a higher level and being able to continue to grow together. I think that's the important part about this trip. They are off school, so they don't have that piece to worry about. It's also an opportunity for someone who is a senior, like Brittany, to win a tournament. She hasn't won a tournament since she's been here. It's an opportunity for us to go out there and do something special that way. We will remain very business-like in our approach and we'll have a little bit of fun the first day we get there. Then, it's going to be all business the rest of the way through."
On handling business against teams you should beat…
"There have been a ton of upsets so far in smaller schools playing bigger schools and just being in really tough games. So, I am proud of how our team has handled this. The rebuild quite frankly, these are games that are either really close or maybe even were lost by Tech in the last few years. It is really exciting for us to not only win these games, but to win them in dominant fashion. That's been the approach that we have taken with our team. The returners have a lot more maturity and experience and the newcomers have added a lot of talent. So, a combination of the two is why we are able to start the way we have."
On Brewer's dominance on the floor…
"Yes, in many ways last year it was almost like she was a freshman. You know, we wish we had her for four years, but we don't. What you are seeing is experience, growth, maturity, coaching, her work ethic (and) her want to. A whole lot of things have come together for Brittany. Also, just realizing, and she has said this, that she can be greater than she ever thought possible as a basketball player and she has really bought into that. I think you are seeing the result of that."
Senior, Forward, Brittany Brewer
On adjustments to being more dominant inside…
"I talked a lot about my aggression and physicality in the summer and that's something I learned from USA Basketball. I brought it into practice, that's definitely why that has shown."
On the switch you have to flip to bring out aggression on the court…
"I struggled with that for a while growing up, learning to switch gears, and now I'm glad I'm getting the hang of it."
On the key to the team…
"I just say our work ethic. We know we need to fine tune stuff going into conference and we are working on that in practice, trying to get better every day in practice, and trying to translate it into the game."
On steps to build on last year…
"I would definitely say that we have taken those steps. We have to keep growing and we haven't got to that level yet, but I think that we can make some major, major steps."
Sophomore, Guard, Chrislyn Carr
On being able to score…
"I know my teammates can shoot the ball, so I'm obviously going to pass them the ball. We have some really good shooters this year, especially with Sydney coming back. I would say just getting them more involved and making the right passes in the right time."
On deciding to shoot or pass…
"Honestly, it's just the feel and knowing when to take my shot and when to pass the ball."
On which freshmen catches her eye…
"I would say Tuck. She impacts on offense and defense. She moves a lot and talks a lot on defense. She rebounds the ball and is very relentless."
