ASUNCION, Paraguay – Texas Tech junior women's golfer Sofia Garcia won nine contests in eight team matches to lead her home country of Paraguay to a third place finish at the Copa Los Andes tournament in Asuncion, Paraguay.
Garcia and her fellow Paraguayan teammates battled it out against the top amateur competitors in South America in the team event that featured both single and group matches across four days of competition. The event was hosted by Paraguay in Garcia's hometown of Asuncion.
In Wednesday's opening rounds, Garcia and team Paraguay fell behind early, losing matches to both Venezuela and Argentina. Garcia picked up one individual match win in four events in the first two rounds, defeating Macarena Aguilera of Argentina at 3&2.
Garcia would catch fire on Thanksgiving Day, as she began her day with a 5&3 foursome victory with fellow teammate Giovanna Fernandez over Columbia. Garcia collected her third overall win of the week with a 5&3 singles win later in the morning. She continued to impress with yet another foursome and solo win against Chile in the afternoon, capturing a 9-3 win for Paraguay to mark the first team win of the tournament.
The sixth victory for Garcia came on Friday as she took down Veintemilla of Ecuador, 5&4. Paraguay would claim their third match Friday evening with a 7-5 victory over Brazil, which included another win by Garcia in a singles match at 4&2.
Due to inclement weather in the afternoon forecast, Garcia solely competed in singles play in Saturday's final two matches. She continued to roll with a 1-up win over Garcia Austt of Uruguay and a 2&1 victory over Candusso of Peru, finishing the week with a 7-1 record in singles matches alone.
Garcia and the Red Raiders will return to action with a trip to Dallas for the SMU/DAC Challenge, beginning February 3rd.
