February 15, 2019 | Softball
The Red Raiders kicked off the Plainsman Invitational with a 2-0 record on day one.
AUBURN, Ala. – Timely hitting and a strong effort in the circle from sophomore Erin Edmoundson helped the Texas Tech softball team (7-0) to a pair of wins on day one of the Plainsman Invitational, Friday at Jane B. Moore Field.
Facing Drake in game one, Edmoundson helped Tech to a 1-0 victory over the Bulldogs after tossing the Red Raider's first no-hitter since 2012. Tech downed the UAB 7-2 in game two to secure the day-one sweep.
Trenity Edwards and Heaven Burton finished the day with three hits apiece.
GAME 1 – Texas Tech 1, Drake 0
Posting a career-high 10 strikeouts, Edmoundson was masterful through seven full innings as she recorded the first no-hitter of her career.
Edwards and Jessica Hartwell were the two Red Raiders to record hits off of Drake's All-American hurler, Nicole Newman.
Edmoundson and Kelcy Leach combined for five strikeouts and a runner caught stealing before Edwards picked up the first hit of the game in the bottom of the second. Though the Red Raiders were unable to bring her around, Edmoundson answered back in the top of the third with three consecutive strikeouts to keep Drake off the board.
The southpaw fanned two hitters in the fourth inning and then matched her career-high in the top of the fifth with her eighth strikeout of the day. Freshman Zoe Jones tried to get the Tech offense rolling with a two-out walk in the bottom of the frame, but Newman held off the Red Raiders for the fifth straight inning.
Drake tried to make things interesting in the top of the sixth after two walks and a sacrifice bunt put a runner in scoring position. After a fly out to Yvonne Whaley in right, Drake's Taryn Pena hit a ball to short and Satchell bobbled on the play. However, the Bulldog rounding third failed to hit the brakes and Satchell threw her out at home to end the threat.
Squaring off against Newman – Drake's cleanup hitter – at the plate, Edmoundson's 100th pitch of the game blew past the Bulldog for her ninth strikeout. After Breanna Russell caught a fly ball in foul territory, Edmoundson collected her 10th and final strikeout to put Tech in prime position for its second walk-off of the season.
Stepping up to the plate for the third time, Hartwell drove a 1-2 pitch up the middle to kick off the bottom of the seventh. Right behind her was fellow-senior Taylor Satchell, who laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Hartwell into scoring position.
With one out, Edwards roped a deep shot to Drake's shortstop. When Mandi Roemmich went to backhand the ball, it bounced off her leg and made its way into left field, allowing Hartwell to cross the plate and give Tech the 1-0 victory.
Edmoundson improved to 5-0 on the season with the no-hit victory.
GAME 2 – Texas Tech 7, UAB 2
The Red Raiders continued their winning ways thanks to a 7-2 victory over UAB. Tech outhit the Blazers 11-6 and freshman pitcher Morgan Hornback earned her first victory thanks to a four-inning effort in relief.
Burton led the squad going 3-for-5 at the plate while Edwards and Satchell both launched home runs. Starter Missy Zoch went three full innings and fanned three hitters.
Tech got rolling early when Burton smoked a leadoff single to short. She immediately stole second and Hartwell followed up with a walk. On a fresh count, Edwards launched a three-run home run – her first of the season – that hit off inside of the left-field foul pole.
After a scoreless second inning, Edwards remained patient at the plate and drew a leadoff walk to start the third. On a 2-2 count, Satchell belted a two-run homer off UAB starter Emily Kachel to put the Red Raiders up 5-0.
Russell was nailed by a pitch in the elbow in the next at-bat and she stole second to put a runner in scoring position. Freshman Yvonne Whaley drilled a ball that the UAB shortstop couldn't handle to put runners on the corners for the Red Raiders.
Tech pushed across its sixth run after Whaley created a diversion between first and second that allowed Russell to cross home plate safely.
Zoch and the Red Raider defense held the Blazers off the board for three straight innings, but UAB answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. A leadoff double, hit batter and walk loaded the bases and Tech brought Hornback into the circle with no outs.
Back-to-back fielder's choices brought in two runs for the Blazers, but a fly out to Whaley in right limited the damage and preserved Tech's 6-2 lead.
Earning her second walk of the game, Russell kicked off the top of the fifth with a free trip to first. Freshman Miranda Padilla came in to run for the sophomore and Jones moved her into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.
On her first pitch against UAB reliever Bailie Barnes, Hornback ripped a double down the left-field line to score Padilla and lift Tech to a 7-2 lead.
A single and back-to-back walks loaded the bases for the Blazers with no outs in the bottom of the fifth. However, Hornback worked herself out of the jam as she raked in a line drive and tallied one strikeout. With two outs, UAB's Jenna Olszewski hit a ball to Jones at second and she couldn't make a play on the ball, allowing a Blazer to score. However, after head coach Adrian Gregory came out to argue the play, runner's interference was called and the run was nullified.
Russell and Hornback both recorded doubles in the top of the seventh and Hornback closed out Tech's 7-2 win with her second strikeout of the game.
With the win, Tech improves to a perfect 7-0 on the season.
