February 21, 2019 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders return to annual event for the first time since 2015
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team is preparing to play in the annual Blue Gray National Tennis Classic this weekend.
The Red Raiders will be looking for their second Blue Gray National Tennis Classic title as they begin their quest with a date with the Rice Owls on Friday at 9:00 a.m. CT. The tournament follows a standard double elimination format.
Opponents in this weekend's field include No. 16 Alabama, Arizona, Auburn, Fresno State, Ole Miss, Princeton and Rice.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Red Raiders fought their way to an emotional victory over No. 19 Tulane in Lubbock on Feb. 10. The number one and two positions in doubles play once again aided Tech in its pursuit of a quick start, as both Bjorn Thomson/Parker Wynn and Jackson Cobb/Tommy Mylnikov won their matches by a 6-4 clip to secure the initial point. In singles play, Mylnikov and Wynn delivered once again with straight-set victories over their opponents to give the Red Raiders the 3-0 advantage. The Green Wave would battle back to pick up two singles wins of their own before freshman Franco Ribero finished them off with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
RED RAIDERS IN THE RANKINGS:
The Oracle/ITA Division I men's singles and doubles rankings were once again updated for the week of Feb. 20.
After going 5-1 to begin the spring campaign, Thomson and Wynn moved up to No. 8 in the nation from their previous ranking of No. 14. They have now won four matches in a row and have posted a 1-0 mark against ranked foes. The duo also finished second at the 2018 ITA National Fall Championships in November.
Mylnikov retained his spot in the national rankings at the No. 114 slot. He is 4-3 on the year in singles and has notched a 5-1 record with fellow teammate Cobb in doubles play.
Making the first appearance of his Red Raider career, Wynn has catapulted his way into the national poll with a No. 115 ranking as the junior has led Tech with a 6-2 mark during the spring. He is 2-1 against nationally ranked opponents and has now won three matches in a row.
QUICK HITS:
With this weekend's tournament, Ribero will be seeking to extend his undefeated streak, as the freshman from Argentina has yet to lose a singles match in his collegiate career. He is currently 5-0, with four of those wins coming at the anchor position.
Starting quickly has continually been a point of emphasis for head coach Brett Masi and the Red Raider squad, as Tech has secured the doubles point in five of its' six wins this season.
The Red Raiders will aim to continue their success against unranked foes, as they are 4-0 on the year against teams outside of the top-25.
Tech is 6-1 this year when playing in the central time zone, with the other two losses coming at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Tallahassee, Fla.
