Offensive Surge Lifts Tech to 7-0 Shutout Over San Diego State
February 24, 2019 | Softball
The Red Raiders recorded their fourth consecutive shutout with a 7-0 win over the Aztecs.
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Texas Tech softball team (13-0) used three home runs to power their way to a 7-0 shutout over the San Diego State Aztecs, Saturday night at Big League Dreams Sports Park.
Missy Zoch fanned five hitters in her fourth win of the season and freshman Morgan Hornback tallied a pair of strikeouts in her two innings pitched. The Tech pitching staff held off San Diego State for a full game - extending its scoreless-inning streak to 27 consecutive innings.
Trenity Edwards, Kelcy Leach and Taylor Satchell each belted a homer as the Red Raiders out-hit the Aztecs 10-4. Satchell and Jessica Hartwell paced the pack with a pair of hits and six other Red Raiders picked up base hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team was able to scratch across a run in the opening inning, but it didn't take much time for the Tech offense to wake up.
On the first pitch she saw against San Diego State starter Marissa Moreno, Edwards broke open the scoring in the top of the second with a line drive that flew well over the left-field wall. A double from Satchell kept the ball rolling and a single from Breanna Russell placed runners on the corners.
Taking advantage of a passed ball by the SDSU catcher, Satchell game charging home to put Tech up by two. Zoe Jones drew a walk in the next at-bat and Russell made it a 3-0 game after she scored on a wild pitch.
Both teams posted a scoreless third inning but Tech tacked on one more run in the top of the fourth when Leach blasted a solo shot over the left-center wall – her second home run of the season. Zoch posted another spotless frame in the bottom of the inning and Tech added more separation in the top of the fifth.
Hamilton and Hartwell recorded a single and walk before Satchell drove a three-run home run over the left-field fence to extend Tech's lead, 7-0.
Zoch produced another spotless frame before Hornback took over in the sixth. The Tech defense stood as a brick wall through the last two innings and shut out the Aztecs, 7-0, after seven full innings.
