Red Raider rookie becomes fifth freshman in the last three seasons to garner selection
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball freshman outfielder Tanner O'Tremba has been named as the Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the week, the league office announced today.
This marks the first weekly award for O'Tremba and the first of the season for the Red Raiders. It is the third-straight year Tech has had a student-athlete earn the award in the first two weeks of the season with Gabe Holt (Feb. 19, 2018) and Josh Jung (Feb. 21, 2017) earning the awards after the opening week of the last two seasons.
O'Tremba hit .455 in Tech's three-game sweep of Kentucky, finishing 5-for-11 at the plate with eight RBI, including seven in the series finale, which marks a Big 12 season high. The Parker, Colo., native hit a three-run blast Sunday in the third inning to break a 2-2 tie and spark a stretch of 10 unanswered runs by the Red Raiders, who went on to win 19-4.
O'Tremba is hitting .350 in the young season with three of his seven hits going for extra bases. He has accumulated two home runs and a double in five starts and currently ranks second on the team with 10 RBI.
The No. 3 Red Raiders return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 26, against New Mexico State at 2 p.m. at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
