Denise-Antonela Stoica clinches her ninth match for Texas Tech
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The No. 26 Lady Raider Tennis squad is headed to the Big 12 semifinals after capturing a 4-3 win over No. 29 Oklahoma on Friday.
Â
Texas Tech (17-7) is moving on to the semifinals for the eighth straight year.
Â
"I thought we played really well today, I thought our doubles point today was the best one of the season and obviously we needed it. Playing them a week ago, we knew they were going to be a lot better than they were in Lubbock because of the conditions," Head Coach Todd Petty said. "OU played amazing. I respect Audra, and the OU team to the max. We had to play our best tennis and it came down to the wire. I don't know if either team deserved to lose, but we are excited to get through it."
The Lady Raiders opened the match with back-to-back wins on doubles courts one and three to clinch the first point of the match. Doubles duo Nell Miller and Lana Rush cruised to a 6-2 victory over Jasmine Asghar and Oleksandra Korashvili on court one before Kennedy Bridgforth and Reagan Collins picked up a 6-3 win over Ivana Corley and Kianah Motosono on court three.
Â
Oklahoma (16-8) tied the match at one-all with a win on court two to open singles play.
Â
Freshman Olivia Peet picked up her 10th singles win of the season as she took down Motosono on court five for the second time. Peet cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win, giving Tech the lead 2-1.
Â
Senior Lana Rush captured Tech's third point of the match as she earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Corley. The match marked her 15th singles win of the season and she is now 13-2 when playing at the No. 6 position this season.
Â
The Sooners won two straight on courts one and three to tie the match at three-all and force the final match to finish.
Â
Freshman Denise-Antonela Stoica earned a tough first set win over Asghar in tiebreaks. Asghar responded with a 6-4 second set win to force the final third set. Stoica turned up the heat and picked up a 6-4 victory to clinch the match.
Â
