Baker Garners Big 12 Newcomer of the Week Honors

Freshman shortstop becomes third Red Raider to bring in the award this season.
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 11 Texas Tech baseball's Dru Baker has been named as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced today.

This marks the first weekly award for Baker and the fourth overall for Texas Tech this season. Baker becomes the third Red Raider rookie to earn newcomer accolades, joining freshman outfielder Tanner O'Tremba (Feb. 25) and sophomore outfielder Dylan Neuse (Mar. 11).

Baker recorded a league-high 12 hits over the week, recording multi-hit efforts in all five of Tech's matchups last week. He hit .522 for the week a home run and three doubles and four RBI, ranking atop the league in total bases and second in slugging percentage.

Baker went 2-for-4 with his second home run of the season in Tech's 15-6 win over New Mexico last Tuesday, following up two doubles against the Lobos on Wednesday in a three-hit effort.

In Friday's comeback win over Kansas, Baker got Tech on the board in the sixth with a two-out, two-run single on his way to a 2-for-3 day. He added two more hits during Tech's 19-4 rout of the Jayhawks on Saturday before finishing with another three-hit day in the finale on Sunday.

Baker and the Red Raiders are gearing up for their annual trip to Midland, Texas, on Tuesday where they'll take on New Mexico State at 7 p.m. at Security Bank Ballpark.
