Texas Tech to host final home meet ahead of Big 12 Championships.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Senior Day in the rearview mirror, Texas Tech will host one final home meet, the Masked Rider Open, on May 4th at the Fuller Track and Field. The Red Raiders will use the meet as final competition for most of the team while a few potential conference scorers will get a chance to be a part of next weekend's trip to Norman for the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
Â
"Most of the people that will go to Big 12s will rest," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Wes Kittley. "However, we do get to take 32 men and 32 women to conference, and we're down to one or two kids on each side that we'd like to see make that trip and we're giving them an opportunity to make that cut."
Â
The Red Raiders are happy to be at their home track while making those considerations, especially considering the performances that occurred just last weekend at the Corky/Crofoot Shootout.
Â
Two school records – the pole vault and discus – were broken, while the men's 4x1 ran the second-fastest time in school history and two women's 400m hurdlers (Alaysha Johnson and Damajahnee Birch) went sub-58 to hit big regional qualifiers and take over as the top-two in the conference. Tech also had Odaine Lewis join Charles Brown as the second Red Raider triple jumper in the national top-three.
Â
"It's just fun to see our kids have those great marks," Kittley said. "We love competing at home, and, as you saw last weekend, several of our marks were incredible."
Â
In addition to a large contingent of Red Raiders running in Lubbock this weekend, distance runner Jonah Koech will be running the 1500m at Stanford's Payton Jordan Invitational Thursday night. Koech, who ranks second in the Big 12 after running a 3:44.11 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in April, will compete in his race at 10 p.m. CT. Live results for Koech's race will be available here.Â
Â
The Masked Rider Open will get underway in Lubbock at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Running events will begin at 3 p.m. Live results will be available here.
