Texas Tech senior will medically retire after suffering a severe knee injury prior to 2018 season
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells announced Friday that senior defensive back Octavious Morgan will medically retire from football.

Morgan, who suffered a severe knee injury in the weeks leading up to the 2018 season, will remain on scholarship at Texas Tech where he is expected to earn his degree within the next year. He will also continue to rehab his knee injury under the supervision of Texas Tech's sports medicine staff.

"It's unfortunate Octavious will not be able to finish out his career on the field," Wells said. "He is well-liked by his teammates and our staff, and our program wishes him nothing but the best as he finishes his degree."

Morgan was projected to be a reliable presence at corner heading into the 2018 campaign before suffering a knee injury in a preseason scrimmage. He recorded 41 tackles and eight pass breakups during his 2017 junior season, his first with the Red Raiders after transferring from Butler Community College.

Morgan, a native of Greenwood, South Carolina, was a four-star prospect at Butler where he was the fourth-best junior college corner in the country according to ESPN. He signed with Texas Tech over a slew of other power-five offers, including Big 12 counterparts Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas State and West Virginia. Â
