Patrick Mahomes was named the “Best NFL Player” during the ESPY Awards on Wednesday night
LUBBOCK, Texas – Patrick Mahomes II continued his reign over the national spotlight Wednesday night as he was recognized as the "Best NFL Player" at the annual ESPY Awards held in Los Angeles.
Mahomes, who was also nominated for Top Male Athlete, sat front row as the top athletes of all of sports were honored throughout the night. He earned "Best NFL Player" accolades on the red carpet earlier in the evening, becoming the first member of the Chiefs to claim the honor in team history.
The Chiefs added another award later in the show in the "Best Game" category that featured their Monday Night Football back-and-forth battle with the Los Angeles Rams. The two teams combined for 105 points, 1,001 yards, 56 first downs and nine lead changes in one of the highest-scoring games in league history.
Mahomes scorched the Rams to the tune of six touchdown passes, his second game already that year he found the end zone six times via the air. He joined only Ben Roethlisberger (2014) and Y.A. Tittle (1962) as the only quarterbacks since 1950 to record multiple games with six or more touchdown passes in a single season.
Mahomes went on to become only the second NFL quarterback all-time to throw for 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in the same season en route to earning NFL MVP honors. Dating back to his time as a Red Raider, he is the only quarterback in history to post 5,000 passing yards in a season at both the collegiate and NFL levels.
The ESPY Awards were determined from fan voting for each of its category. The annual celebration of the best in sports began in 1993 and aired nationally on ABC.
