Tech alum Alli Murphy signs with UMF Selfoss in Iceland’s Urvalsdeild.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Former Texas Tech soccer midfielder Alli Murphy announced her signing with UMF Selfoss in Iceland's Úrvalsdeild league this week. The Red Raider, who rounded her Tech career out in 2015 by helping the program win its first-ever Big 12 Championship, will once again take the field with former Tech teammate Cassie Boren, who finished her collegiate career last fall.
Â
It is the second time in the past year two Red Raiders have signed with the same pro teams, as Rebekah O'Brien (2014-17) and Lauren Watson (2013-16) inked deals with Assi IF in Sweden in December.
Â
"It's always great when you get the opportunity to play with another Red Raider," Murphy said. "For me, it brings a little excitement back to the game and some comfort playing with someone you've played with before. That chemistry is still there because you know how they play."
Â
For Boren, whose first year in Lubbock was Murphy's last, the chance to rejoin her teammate is special because of the way she looked up to Murphy.
Â
"She had such an impact on me when I was a freshman at Tech and she was a great senior leader," she said. "She was always encouraging and coaching me, and I can't wait to see what she brings to our team."
Â
After Tech's Big 12 title in 2015, Murphy was drafted by the Washington Spirit of the NWSL. She moved her career to Sweden before returning to the NWSL with an invite to join the Houston Dash. She made one appearance with the squad before signing with Dutch club PEC Zwolle, where she appeared in a pro career-high 18 matches. She was picked in the starting lineup 15 times and netted her first pro goal in a regular season matchup with Achilles '29.
Â
"For my playing career, I wanted to come to Iceland," Murphy said of the career move. "The Úrvalsdeild is a strong and high-intensity league and will certainly help me improve my game."
Â
Murphy will join a Selfoss squad which currently sits 7-5-1. The club has won four of its last five matches to hop into third in the league table. Boren has started in 11 of the team's 13 contests this season, logging 990 minutes on the back line.
