Adams Receives Good Scout Award
August 21, 2019 | Men's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech assistant coach Mark Adams was recently honored with the Good Scout Award by the Lone Star District of the Buffalo Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The recognition is presented to an individual who epitomizes the ideals of scouting.
"The Boy Scout motto of always being prepared is something I've always carried with me through my coaching career," said Adams who became a Boy Scout at 6-years-old in Brownfield. "Our individuals are prepared and our team is the most prepared. As a coach it is my goal that each individual I work with walks away having grown in each of these principles: character, leadership, citizenship and personal fitness."
The Good Scout Award is an honor that the Lone Star District of the Buffalo Trail Council presents to individuals that have exemplified the Principles of Scouting: character development, leadership development, citizenship training, and personal fitness within our community to the betterment of others. Recipients are chosen because they intentionally live a life that expresses the same values as those held in belief by the Boy Scouts of America program and stated in Scout Law.
Adams, who accepted the award in Big Spring at Hotel Settles, is widely respected as one of the best defensive coaches in the country, leading Tech to the nation's top defensive efficiency rating and also earned the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches' 2019 College Division I Assistant of the Year. The Red Raiders, who won the 2019 Big 12 Conference regular-season championship, were second in the country by holding teams to 37.0 percent shooting, were third by limiting the opposition to 59.5 points per game and led the Big 12 with opponents only shooting 29.8 percent on 3-pointers during the run to the Final Four and the National Runner-Up finish. Tech was coming off a banner season in 2017-18 on the defensive end where it limited their opponents to 64.8 points per game and a 40.1 shooting percentage to pace the Big 12 conference in 2017-18. Both marks were ranked inside the NCAA's Top 20, and it marked the first time in program history that Texas Tech ended the season as the Big 12 leader in both defensive categories.
Â
The Red Raiders have held the opposition to 60 or less points on 40 occasions during Adams' first three seasons as an assistant coach. Tech held four opponents in the 2019 NCAA Tournament to under 60 points, including earning a 63-44 win over Michigan in the Sweet 16 and then a 61-51 win over Michigan State in the Final Four.Â
Adams is entering his fourth season as an assistant for head coach Chris Beard at Texas Tech and one season as Beard's assistant at Little Rock where the Trojans went 30-5 and won the Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament title. UALR knocked off Purdue in the NCAA Tournament first round. Prior to working with Beard, Adams was the Texas Tech Director of Basketball Operations from 2013-15 after being the head coach at Howard College (2004-13), Texas Pan-American (1992-97), West Texas A&M (1987-92), Wayland Baptist (1983-87) and Clarendon College (1981-82). He led Howard College to the 2010 NJCAA National Championship and was named the NJCAA National Coach of the Year to highlight 15 Coach of the Year honors he earned during his head coaching career.
