Women Win, Men Take Second in TTU Open

Tech completes lone home meet of season with victory on women’s side.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech wrapped up its second meet of the season – and lone home meet – Saturday morning with several encouraging performances from its groups.Â

The women highlighted the day, taking the team win by a convincing 43 points. The group was led by its veterans, Nokuthula Dlamini (third place) and Seselia Dala (fifth). Dlamini ran an 18:25.20 in her first cross country meet since 2017 after missing last fall due to injury. Dala completed the 5k with a personal record 18:33.70.Â

Two additional Lady Raiders rounded out the top-10, coming in the forms of Claudrice McKoy and Jazmyn Martinez. McKoy, a junior transfer from Monroe College, ran just 10 seconds off her PR at 19:06.90 in her second meet at Tech. Martinez was strong, running well under PR with a 10th-place 19:07.80. Just outside the top-10 and rounding out scoring for Tech were Binta Ka (19:13.00) and Bret Leigh Nance (19:14.40).
"What a great team effort by the women's team," said head coach Jon Murray. "This was one of the best group running efforts by a Texas Tech team in a long time. It will be exciting to see what this group will do this year."

The men's group finished second as a whole. Led by Cornelius Kiprotich, the men tallied 74 points to Lubbock Christian's 57. Kiprotich was responsible for four of those points with his third-place finish. He crossed in 26:31.60. Nathan Gift was right on his heels, running a 26:35.40 for fourth place. Luke Estes, who led Tech at Abilene Christian's Naimadu Classic, finished 17th with a 27:19.90. Freshmen Richard Taylor (20th) and Walker Hendricks (29th) rounded out the scoring for the Red Raiders.Â

Tech's next test will be the Mizzou Challenge on Sept. 27th.
