RED RAIDER QUICK HITS
- Head coach Tony Graystone is three wins away from the 500th victory of his coaching career.
- After their performances at the Red Raider Classic, Katy Northcut and Emerson Solano were honored on the Red Raider Classic All-Tournament Team while senior Emily Hill was named the Red Raider Classic Most Valuable Player.Â
- Before Wednesday's contest, senior Emily Hill continued to rank among the nation's top players as she sat second in kills and points. Additionally, Hill stood 12th overall in kills per set and points per set.Â
- Earlier in the week, sophomore Katy Northcut earned a spot in ESPN SportsCenter's Top-10 Plays. She recorded the first kill of her career in the strangest of ways in the third set against West Virginia. Hoping to dig out an attack from the Mountaineers, Northcut took a ball to the face that ricocheted over the net. From there, the trajectory from the ball tipped off the fingers of an unsuspecting Mountaineer and landed in for the kill.Â
- Stepping into a major role for the Red Raiders, sophomore setter Tatum Rohme ranks 19th in the nation with 11.05 assists per set. Her 475 assists on the year stand third in the Big 12 Conference. Â
- Helping Tech to a perfect 4-0 at week at United Supermarkets Arena, junior Emerson Solano earned Red Raider Classic All-Tournament honors after she served as an integral piece to the Red Raider's success. Solano led the Big 12 Conference with a total of 49 digs on the week. Thanks to her leadership, Tech held their opponents to a mere .103 hitting percentage - a mark that proved to be the best in the league. Averaging 3.43 digs per set, she collected a team-leading eight digs and one ace against ACU to start the Red Raiders week. On Friday, Solano returned to the floor and paced Tech with 17 digs against Houston – she also collected four assists and one service ace against the Cougars. The junior tallied 12 digs, one ace and two assists against UIW before she closed out the tournament with a team-leading 12-dig performance against UTEP.Â
- Named the Most Valuable Player of the 2019 Red Raider Classic, Emily Hill dominated the competition through four matches last week at United Supermarkets Arena. For the third time this season, Hill paced the Big 12 Conference in kills – this time racking up 57 (4.07 per set) through 14 sets. The senior posted a league-high 64.0 points over the course of the week. Hill began the week with an 11-kill eight-dig performance in Tech's 3-0 victory over Abilene Christian. Then, against Houston on Friday, she led all players in the match with 18 kills. She collected a team-high 15 digs to go along with one assist against the Cougars. She led the match again the next day after she racked up 17 kills against Incarnate Word. She produced three solo blocks, as well as one block assist, against the Cardinals. Finishing the week on a high note, Hill posted another double-digit kill performance with 12 total kills against the UTEP Miners. Hill collected one solo block and one block assist and finished the match with 13.5 total points.Â
- Emily Hill started her senior year with a bang and earned the Big 12 Conference's first Offensive Player of the Week award of 2019. The weekly nod was the first of her career and the first weekly offensive award since Lauren Douglass was dubbed the league's Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 1, 2014.Â
- The Red Raiders are looking for their first win over Texas since Nov. 11, 2000. Tech posted two wins (3-1, 3-0) over the Longhorns that season, but have not won a single match since.Â
- Two Red Raiders celebrated birthdays in the month of September. Emily Hill turned 22 years old on Tuesday, Sept. 17, and sophomore Alex Kirby turned 20 on Sunday, Sept. 22.
- You're not just seeing things. Freshmen Lauren Dodson and Lindsey Dodson are one of the few pairs of sisters to grace the Texas Tech volleyball program. The Dodsons are the first set of twins that head coach Tony Graystone has ever coached in his now 21 years of coaching.
- Three Red Raiders – Emily Hill, Allison White and Emerson Solano – have started all 15 matches for Tech this season.Â
- After a stellar outing at the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryouts, sophomore Brooke Kanas became the fourth Red Raider in program history to earn a spot on the U.S. Women's Collegiate National Team. She spent June 23-29 training with the nation's domestic program in Anaheim, Calif. She is the youngest Red Raider to have spent a summer training with the U.S. Collegiate National Team.Â
- The Texas Tech volleyball team was honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as an Academic Honor Roll Team after the squad posted a top-25 cumulative grade point average among all Division I institutions for the 2018-19 academic year. The prestigious honor was achieved thanks to a historic year in the classroom. In the fall, Tech placed a program-record 10 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Teams – nine first-team selections and one second-team nod. The Red Raiders also paced the Big 12 for the second straight year as four student-athletes recorded 4.00 grade point averages.Â
- A major part of the Texas Tech defense, junior Emerson Solano continues to rock the court after starting all 30 matches as Texas Tech's libero in 2018. Her 442 digs on the year ranked No. 10 in the school record book for digs per season and she ranked second in the Big 12 with 4.06 digs per set as a sophomore. Averaging an impressive 4.09 digs per set, her 221 digs on the season ties for first in the Big 12 Conference.Â
