January 13, 2020 | Men's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech is nationally ranked for the fifth straight week after being slotted No. 23 in the Associated Press Top 25 along with coming in at No. 36 in the NCAA NET Rankings.
The Red Raiders (10-5, 1-2 Big 12) will return to action against Kansas State at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Bramlage Coliseum before hosting Iowa State at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the United Supermarkets Arena. Tech, which was at No. 22 in last week's poll, dropped one spot following losses to No. 2 Baylor and No. 12 West Virginia last week. The team has now been ranked in nine of 11 polls this season, including starting at No. 13 in the preseason ranking for the highest point in program history following its run to the NCAA National Championship Final last season.
Gonzaga remains the top-ranked team in the nation, while Baylor moved up to No. 2 after its win over the Red Raiders last Tuesday in Lubbock and then knocking off Kansas on Saturday in Lawrence. The Jayhawks moved from No. 3 to No. 6 following the loss. Duke, Auburn and Butler round out the top-5 in this week's rankings. Tech is 1-3 against current with its win coming against Louisville which was No. 1 at the time but is now at No. 11. Creighton is No. 25 in this week's poll and has an 83-76 overtime win over Tech on its resume.
Statistically, Texas Tech is 12th nationally and second in the Big 12 with 16.9 assists per game after assisting on 12 of 21 shots at WVU on Saturday. The Red Raiders lead the Big 12 with 17.07 turnovers forced per game (28th nationally) and are also second in the conference in free throws made (235), free-throw percentage (75.1) and total assists (253) through 15 games. Tech is scoring 73.7 points per game which is fifth in the conference along with limiting opponents to 39.6 percent shooting. A 3.5 turnover margin has them third in the Big 12 and 31st nationally. Individually, Davide Moretti leads the conference and is eighth nationally at 92.2 percent from the free-throw line, while Chris Clarke is second in the conference with 5.9 assists per game and seventh with 8.5 rebounds per game. Clarke is 21st nationally with a 2.70 assist-to-turnover ratio which is second in the conference behind only Iowa State's Tyrese Haliburton who is at 3.0. Moretti is the NCAA active career leader with a 91.3 percentage from the line where he is 168 of 184 through 90 games in his career. He is currently 47 of 51 this season and 5 of 7 through three conference games. Ramsey is fourth in the conference in scoring and leads the Big 12 by shooting 46.8 percent on 3-pointers.
Baylor leapfrogged Kansas and Duke into the second spot in The Associated Press men's college basketball poll on Monday after notching road victories last week at Texas Tech and then at Allen Fieldhouse against the Jayhawks.
The Bears finished with 1,567 points in voting by 65 media members who regularly cover the game, just seven back of top-ranked Gonzaga -- even though Baylor had 31 first-place votes and the Bulldogs had 30.
Baylor (13-1, 3-0 Big 12) hasn't lost since playing Washington in Alaska in its second game of the season. Along the way, the team from Waco, Texas, has notched nonconference wins over ranked teams Villanova, Arizona and Butler along with league wins over the Red Raiders, the Jayhawks and Texas.
The win over Kansas was the first for Baylor in 18 tries at Allen Fieldhouse and the first over a top-five team on the road. The biggest climb came from Wichita State, which jumped seven spots to No. 16 after soundly beating No. 22 Memphis and turning back Connecticut in double overtime. The Shockers' only loss came against No. 12 West Virginia in the championship game of the Cancun Classic in late November.
