Red Raiders Set to Start 2020 Dual Match Season in Iowa
January 15, 2020 | Men's Tennis
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Texas Tech men's tennis team will open their dual match season with a bout against the University of Iowa at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex in Iowa City, Iowa on Thursday, beginning at 6 p.m. CT.
The Red Raiders will begin their spring semester away from Lubbock for the fourth-consecutive year and will aim to collect their fourth-straight win in season openers on the road. Tech has won their last five dual match-opening matches dating back to the 2015-16 season. Their last true road loss to start the year came in a 3-4 defeat to Rice in Houston in 2003.
FAMILIAR FACES TAKE THE COURT:
Tech is led by first-year head coach Daniel Whitehead, who served as an assistant for two years before being promoted to the head spot. The Red Raiders return six players who played for last year's NCAA Tournament squad, including three seniors in Jackson Cobb, Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn.
Sophomore Franco Ribero and All-Big 12 honoree Ilgiz Valiev, who combined for 26 dual match victories a season ago, as well as junior Justin Bloss, will also return for the Red Raiders.
RED RAIDERS IN THE RANKINGS:
The Oracle/ITA Division I men's singles and doubles rankings were last updated at the conclusion of the fall session on Nov. 10, 2019.
Valiev reached a singles ranking of No. 69 following a stellar fall that included a quarterfinal berth at the ITA Texas Regionals in October. Freshman Reed Collier racked up seven singles wins in his first semester as a Red Raider, including a runner-up finish at the Texas Regionals. He will start his maiden dual match season at No. 114.
