Gerlich Announces Signing of All-American Vivian Gray
October 02, 2020 | Women's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Lady Raider basketball head coach Krista Gerlich announced the signing of graduate transfer Vivian Gray on Friday. Gray played the last two seasons at Oklahoma State, and is a two-time All-American and two-time First Team All-Big 12 selection.
"It's an exciting time for Lady Raider Basketball to add a player of Vivian Gray's caliber, along with her work ethic and mindset to our program," Gerlich said. "Vivian is one of the best guards in women's college basketball. She's a high-volume scorer with a high basketball IQ that enables her to elevate the play of those around her. Vivian has also established herself as an elite defender, which makes her one of the most well-rounded players in the nation. She has fit right into our team and her teammates have welcomed her with open arms. We are all thrilled that Vivian is a Lady Raider."
Gray was named an honorable mention All-America recipient by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association each of the last two seasons, and was named to the Associated Press All-America team as an honorable mention pick following her junior season in 2020. Both of her First Team All-Big 12 selections were by unanimous vote.
Last year, Gray was one of 10 finalists for the Cheryl Miller Award, given each year to the best small forward in the nation. She scored 19.3 points per game to rank second in the Big 12 and 19th nationally in scoring.
Among Big 12 players, she finished her junior season ranking second in minutes played (37.6 mpg), third in free-throw percentage (84.1 percent) and fifth in assist-turnover ratio (1.7). She was also ninth in the league in assist per game (3.7 apg), 13th in steals (1.6 spg), 15th in field-goal percentage (36.3 percent) and 15th in blocked shots (0.8 bpg).
During the 2018-19 season, Gray averaged 20.0 points and 5.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists on the way to earning Big 12 Newcomer of the Year recognition and a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 first team. That year, she averaged 19.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game against Top 25 opponents and finished with a team-best 36 blocked shots—the most ever by a Cowgirl wing.
As a freshman, Gray played at Fort Lewis College, where she led the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in scoring at 18.5 points per game, to go along with averages of 7.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game. She earned first-team all-conference recognition as well as RMAC Freshman of the Year honors.
Gray attended Argyle High School, where she scored 2,893 points, led her team to three state titles and earned Texas Class 4A Player of the Year accolades on two occasions. She received a five-star rating and was tabbed as the No. 45 recruit in the country in the ESPN HoopGurlz Rankings in 2017.
