Texas Tech to honor two seniors prior to home match with Iowa State.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech will return home in search of its first three-point weekend with a Friday night home match against Iowa State. Pregame festivities will include formal recognition of the careers of two senior defenders.
Texas Tech will honor two seniors Friday: Macy Hairgrove and Amanda Porter. Hairgrove made her way to Lubbock by way of Castle Rock, Colorado, and has been a member of Texas Tech's back line for four years. She has made over 20 appearances in her Red Raider career, including multiple starts this season for the first time. Hairgrove is a two-time First Team Academic All-Big 12 selection, doing so while majoring in marketing. After graduation in May, she plans to work in the NBA or with a sports marketing firm.
Porter arrived on campus as a junior transfer from Arizona and has provided a boost to the Texas Tech defense. She played in 21 games – starting 18 – her first year as a Red Raider, helping lead the Red Raider defense to a Big 12-leading five shutouts in conference play. Porter, a human sciences major, will attend PA school after graduation.
"On one hand, we're disappointed 2020 didn't provide the backdrop that we would've liked for both of these great seniors," said head coach Tom Stone. "But we are so grateful that Macy chose us four years ago and that Amanda, after a lengthy transfer process, decided to come to Lubbock."
Tech's return to the John Walker Soccer Complex comes on the heels of a tough 2-0 loss at No. 6 TCU. Despite a determined second half offensive effort, the Red Raiders could not find the back of the net after conceding two early goals to the Horned Frogs.
"We had to make a system change in the second half," Stone said after the loss. "We got them a bit on the offensive, but the chances we created went missing and we couldn't get that ever-important first goal to be able to make the game interesting in the end."
While the Red Raiders will be searching for their first win of the season Friday, the visiting Cyclones will be searching for their first win over Tech since 2011 and first win in Lubbock since Stone took the job in 2007. Stone's teams, which own an 11-1-1 record against Iowa State, have outscored the Cyclones 30-8 overall and 22-5 at The Walker.
Iowa State's two victories are the most in conference for the program since 2016. Both winning efforts this season were impressive for a squad that went winless in the Big 12 last year; the Cyclones have knocked off Baylor in overtime and taken three points from Oklahoma in Norman this fall.
"Iowa State looks great," said associate head coach Gibbs Keeton. "They're excited about their new coach, they're playing for their teammates and they're super committed."
To capture three points, the Red Raiders will need to keep a determined Cyclones squad at bay while working hard with a limited roster.
"The key for us is to respond to the roster we have available," Stone said. "The players that have the opportunity to play in a Big 12 game need to be accountable to their role and their job. They need to see this as an opportunity to grab what we've been pushing for since the start of the season, which is three points."
First touch Friday is set for 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
