Red Raiders Wrap Up Play at ITA Texas Regionals
October 27, 2020 | Men's Tennis
WACO, Texas- The Texas Tech men's tennis team was back in action this weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division-I Men's Texas Regional Championship.
Â
After a rain delay postponed all singles matches on Friday, play continued with two rounds of doubles.
Â
The duo of junior Franco Ribero and junior Dimitrios Azoidis took down K Yamanaka and Nathan Schwartz (A&M CC) in the first round (8-6) but couldn't get going in the second.
Â
Early on, the Red Raiders came out hot on the singles side, as Ilgiz Valiev defeated Nevin Arimilli of Texas, 6-4, 6-0, and junior Dimitrios Azoidis battled TCU's Max Kurzban in round one winning, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Azoidis continued to play well as he defeated last year's regional champion Sven Lah of Baylor, 6-3, 6-3. Junior Franco Ribero worked his way to a couple wins for the Red Raiders as well, defeating Lamar's Alan Sau Franco in a 7-6, 3-6, 10-5 decision.
Â
Sophomore Reed Collier found success in the singles bracket as well. Collier remained undefeated this weekend, with a 6-1, 6-1 win over the UT-Arlington's Miguel Cabrera in his final match. Collier won three straight matches in route to a spot in the championship. However, due to the postponement of singles matches on Friday, both players decided not to play the last match.
Â
The Red Raiders will next travel to Fort Worth for the Big 12 Individual Championships on Nov. 6-8.
