Garcia Set to Play in Arnold Palmer Cup
December 20, 2020 | Women's Golf
Ryder Cup-style event runs Monday through Wednesday at Bill Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior Sofia Garcia will compete in the prestigious Arnold Palmer Cup for the second time in her career starting Monday when the Ryder Cup-style tournament tees off from Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando.
Â
Garcia was one of 28 men's and women's players selected to the international teams, which includes a familiar face in fellow Red Raider golfer Ludvig Aberg. The pair will play a practice round Sunday before beginning the match-play format Monday.
Â
Garcia, who currently ranks No. 21 in the Golfstat individual poll, will look to help the international team repeat as champions after combining with fellow Red Raiders Sandy Scott and Ivan Ramirez to win the 2019 event. She played in four events for the Red Raiders this fall, averaging 72.0 strokes with three top-10 performances.
Â
The Ryder Cup-style event features the top men's and women's college golfers, matching the United States against its international counterparts. Originally scheduled for July 3-5 at Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland, the event was moved to December and to Arnold Palmer's winter home, the Bay Hill Club and Lodge, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Â
The inaugural Arnold Palmer Cup was staged in Orlando in 1997, making Bay Hill the first venue to host the matches twice. The United States leads the all-time series, 12-10-1, entering this week's event.
