No. 24 Texas Tech to Open 2021 With ITA Kickoff Weekend
December 07, 2020 | Men's Tennis
Red Raiders will be joined by the likes of No. 5 Ohio State, No. 23 Iowa and No. 33 Virginia
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team is set to open their 2021 campaign at the 13th-annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Weekend set for Jan. 22–23.
Â
In an unprecedented draft format that features the nation's top-28 teams, spread across 10 different facilities across the nations, the 24th-ranked Red Raider men's team was selected third in the Columbus, Ohio region. Tech will be joined in the pool by No. 5 Ohio State, No. 23 Iowa and No. 33 Virginia. Â Â Â
Â
"This kickoff weekend, being a new format this year with fewer hosts, makes it an even more prestigious national event," head coach Daniel Whitehead said. "What an opportunity for us to go to Columbus, Ohio and play a very tough Iowa team that we have seen before and follow it up with another great match against either Ohio State or Virginia. We will get tested early in the season which will help us down the road."
Â
The ITA has modified the format of the 2021 Kickoff due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There are seven host sites for Kickoff Weekend instead of the typical 15. The weekend will keep its usual format of four teams at each host site, with each team playing two matches. The two-win team at each site will advance to the ITA Indoor National Championship, hosted Feb. 5-7 by the University of Illinois at the Atkins Tennis Center.
