Red Raiders Back Home for Texas Tech Shootout
February 12, 2020 | Track and Field
Tech returns to SPC for home meet featuring more of nation’s top programs.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech track and field returns home this weekend for a two-day meet spanning Friday and Saturday. Nearly the full team will be back in action after just a small group made the trip to last weekend's NM Collegiate Classic in Albuquerque.
Â
Dubbed the Texas Tech Shootout, the meet will welcome another solid crop of visiting programs, including Alabama, Arizona, BYU, Iowa, Ole Miss and Virginia Tech. With under three weeks until the Big 12 Championships and five until the NCAA Championships, conference teams Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas will also head to Lubbock this weekend in search of strong qualifying marks.
Â
The Red Raiders are up for the competition. Two weeks ago, Tech held its own in a home meet which saw a staggering 12 facility records fall in the span of two days. A small group then made its way to New Mexico for a preview of the NCAA Indoor Championships facility. There, Gabe Oladipo re-broke his own school record, becoming the first Red Raider ever to go over 70 feet in the weight throw. His toss of 71'-0.75" (21.66m) bumped him from just outside the crucial top-16 national rankings to 10th.
Â
Ruth Usoro also continued her hot run of form, last week setting a PR in the long jump. Combined with her school-record triple jump of 44'-3.25" (13.49m) places her in the national top-10 in both events. In four meets at Tech since transferring in from South Plains, Usoro has recorded three program top-10 jumps – two in the triple and one in the long.
Â
Chloe Wall was another Red Raider who turned in an exciting performance in New Mexico. The junior's top clearance came at 14'-2.75" (4.34m), good enough for the third-best mark in school history. Wall's mark places her inside the national top-10 at eighth in the country. Saturday's performance counts as her second career program top-10 mark, the other coming last season.Â
Â
In addition to another meet in Lubbock, head distance coach Jon Murray will take a group of three to Washington for the Husky Classic. This group will consist of Nokuthula Dlamini, Takieddine Hedeilli and Seselia Dala. The threesome will seek to gain qualifications for the NCAA Championships by racing at a talented distance meet. Hedeilli has already landed himself in good position for a qualification after running an eighth-ranked 1:48.19 in the 800m at the Texas Tech Invitational.
Â
The Texas Tech Shootout will begin Friday at 4 p.m. Saturday's events will start at 11 a.m. Both days of action will be streamed on TexasTechTV.
