Red Raiders to Compete at The Prestige
February 16, 2020 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 9-ranked Texas Tech men's golf team continues its spring season this week at The 20th Annual Prestige Presented by Charles Schwab which will be played at the Greg Norman Course at PGA WEST from Monday-Wednesday in La Quinta, California. Additionally, three Red Raiders will compete at the separate Prestige Individual Tournament at the Coral Mountain Golf Club. Live scoring through Golfstat will be available for all three rounds and the final round will be live streamed on Golfweek.com from 12-5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Tech will be represented this week by Sandy Scott, Kyle Hogan, Andy Lopez, Ludvig Aberg and Markus Braadlie at the team tournament, while Garrett Martin, Jansen Smith and Jamie Stewart are competing at the individual tournament. The Red Raiders are currently ranked No. 9 nationally in the Golfstat rankings and are No. 6 in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll after opening their spring season last week with a seventh-place showing at the Amer Ari Invitational. Tech is coming off a fall campaign with tournament victories at The Carmel Cup, Iverness Intercollegiate and the second annual Big 12 Match Play Tournament and has been ranked as high as No. 1 this season. The 54-hole tournament will be played with 18 holes per day starting with 9:30 a.m. (CST) tee times all three days, while the individual tournament will have an 11 a.m. shotgun start the first two days before an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start in the final round.Â
The Red Raiders will be competing against No. 1 Pepperdine, No. 41 Arkansas, Iowa State, No. 25 LSU, No. 35 Northwestern, No. 33 Oklahoma State, Oregon State, No. 42 San Diego State, No. 13 SMU, No. 45 Stanford, University of Stirling (Scotland), No. 16 Texas, UC Davis, No. 22 UCLA, and Wyoming. All told, this year's field features six programs ranked among the top 25 in the GolfStat and GolfWeek rankings released on Feb. 12, as well as eight of the top 25 individual players in the nation — four of those ranked among the top 10 — according to the GolfWeek rankings. LSU is the defending tournament team champion — and has won three of the last four — while Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland was last year's individual medalist at 8-under (68-71-66–205). In all, five former tournament team champions will be playing at this year's event: LSU, Oklahoma State, Stanford, UCLA, and Northwestern. UCLA, LSU, and TCU, have all won the tournament three times, while Stanford and Washington are also multiple winners. Stanford has also claimed individual medalist honors five times, followed by TCU (3), UC Davis (2), Washington (2), and Pepperdine (2). Pepperdine won the Amer Ari last week followed by the Longhorns who took runner-up.
A senior from Scotland, Scott comes into this week ranked No. 9 nationally in the Golfstat individual rankings after leading the Red Raiders with a 10th-place showing in Hawaii to open the spring season. Also ranked No. 8 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Scott, who is averaging rounds of 69.70, shot 68-72-67 – 207 at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate for his third top-10 finish of the season. He opened the year by winning The Carmel Cup at 14-under and also took sixth at the Tavistock Collegiate. During the fall, Scott also competed at The Walker Cup. Lopez is coming off a 14th-place finish at the Amer Ari after posting 72-67-69 – 208 after a fall season where he had two top-3 finishes. He opened his junior season with a third-place finish at The Carmel Cup at 11-under and then won his first collegiate tournament by shooting 2-under as an individual at The Iverness in mid-September. Lopez is currently ranked No. 42 in the Golfstat rankings with a 70.53 scoring average for the season.
A freshman from Sweden, Aberg is currently ranked No. 37 in the WAGR and is coming off a 21st-place showing at the Amer Ari where he shot 66-68-76 – 210 for his top showing this season. He has competed in all tournaments this season and also won the Sun Bowl Classic in El Paso after the fall collegiate season. Prior to his first top-25 showing as a Red Raider last week, Aberg had finished 28th at 3-over-par at The Carmel Cup and helped to lead Tech to the Big 12 Match Play Tournament title. Hogan, a junior from Cypress, Texas, is coming off a week where he competed at the Genesis Open Collegiate Showcase last Monday at the Riviera Country Club following the Amer Ari. He shot 4-over at the prestigious event in California after posting 72-72-74 – 218 in Hawaii. Hogan, who finished the fall season with third-place finishes at the Iverness Intercollegiate and Tavistock Collegiate, is currently at No. 85 in the Golfstat rankings with a 70.87 scoring average. Braadlie is coming off a performance at the Amer Ari where he finished 18th overall after posting a 67-73-69 – 209 as an individual. The Prestige is the second of a six-tournament spring schedule that will lead into the Big 12 Championship on April 27-29 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
