Red Raiders to Compete at Blue Gray National Tennis Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team are set to make their return to the annual Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery on Friday, beginning with a matchup with No. 48 Alabama at 9 a.m. CT.
The Red Raiders (6-3) are currently riding a three-match win streak following wins over Tulane, No. 20 Mississippi State and Mississippi Valley State earlier in the month.
The Blue Gray is scheduled to be played out with two rounds on Friday and final-round action on Saturday.
RED RAIDERS IN THE RANKINGS:
The Oracle/ITA Division I rankings were updated on Feb. 20. Tech earned their first team ranking of the 2019-20 campaign when they landed at No. 21 on Tuesday.
Senior Parker Wynn, after previously being unranked in the polls, jumped to No. 53 in the singles rankings following a stellar weekend in Mississippi where he took down back-to-back ranked opponents at the primary position, including No. 27 Giovanni Oradini of Mississippi State. Wynn's ranking of No. 53 is the highest of his Red Raider career.
Junior Ilgiz Valiev also remained ranked in this week's standings at No. 74, while freshman Reed Collier jumped to No. 123 after being unranked in the previous poll.
Bjorn Thomson and Wynn rose five spots from No. 60 to 55 in the doubles rankings on Tuesday.
QUICK HITS:
The Red Raiders are 2-2 all-time against Alabama, including a 2-1 mark on neutral courts. Tech's last two meetings against the Crimson Tide have come at the Blue Gray with a 4-1 loss in 2019 and a 4-1 win in 2017. Friday's matchup will be the third time the two teams have met while both being ranked in the top-50.
Tech holds a 22-16 all-time mark in the Blue Gray, including a title in 2010 and a runner-up finish in 2008. The Red Raiders are 10-2 all-time in opening-round matches to begin the tournament.
Thomson's incredible run in singles play has him leading the team in dual match victories in 2020 with a 6-1 record. Sophomore Franco Ribero narrowly trails Thomson with a 5-0 mark to begin the year.
Wynn is 3-2 at the No. 1 spot with three wins over ranked opponents this season, a team best.
A host of Red Raiders have collected at three wins in the first nine matches of the season in Isaac Arevalo, Collier and Francisco Vittar.
