Red Raiders Continue Spring with Trip to Puerto Rico
February 06, 2020 | Women's Golf
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The Texas Tech women's golf team is set to compete in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic at Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico from Feb. 9-11.
The annual tournament, hosted in 2020 by Purdue, features one of the strongest fields the Red Raiders will face all season, as all 14 competing programs are ranked inside the top-100 of Golfweek Magazine's team rankings.
The three-day affair will begin with a 6 a.m. CT shotgun start on Sunday. Monday's round is also scheduled to begin at 6, while Tuesday's final round will get underway at 5:30 in the morning.
The Red Raiders are making their first trip to the Lady Puerto Rico Classic since the 2017 season, where they finished in seventh place. The 2020 tournament will represent the 11th time Tech has competed in Puerto Rico.
Tech highest finishes at the Rio Mar Country Club came in 2013 and 2016, where the Red Raiders finished in solo third place on both occasions. Former Red Raider great Gabby Barker recorded the best solo performance by a Red Raider in the competition when she finished play at 7-under, just one shot back of first place. Barker's 209 is tied for the second-best three-round total in tournament history.
Anna Dong will lead the way for Tech in Puerto Rico, coming off the best performance of her career a week ago at the DAC/SMU Challenge in Dallas. Dong posted a 1-over 145 and finished in second place. Sofia Garcia will look to continue her string of success this season, as the junior has already notched four top-five finishes and a win in 2019.
Freshman Gala Dumez posted her first top-five showing of her young career a week ago and will also make the trip. Cecilie Nielsen, who tied for seventh as an individual competitor in Dallas and Amy Taylor, who tied for 18th, will round out the lineup for head coach JoJo Robertson.
Taylor will carry the Folds of Honor bag, honoring the legacy of fallen U.S. Army infantryman Brynn Naylor.
Live scoring for the Lady Puerto Rico Classic will be provided by Golfstat.com.
